Lyndon Baines Johnson was born near Johnson City in southwestern Texas on August 27, 1908. He wasn*t born to a rich family, so he attended public schools in Blanco Country, Texas, and graduated from Johnson City High School in 1924. For the first year after college, Johnson taught public speaking and debate in a Houston high school. In 1931, Johnson campaigned for Richard M. Kleberg and was rewarded with an appointment as the new congressman*s secretary. After he took the role of president, he promised he would keep the policies that Kennedy was promoting, and he made his own program called the "Great Society". During his inauguration, he said, "In a land of great wealth, families must not live in hopeless poverty. In a land rich in harvest, children just must not go hungry. In a land of healing miracles, neighbors must not suffer and die unattended. In a great land of learning and scholars, young people must be taught to read and write."
