There were many reasons the Bolsheviks succeeded in winning the civil war, one of those being Trotsky’s ability to lead and organise the Bolsheviks. Among others were differences in the White army, intervention of foreign countries, and the strengths of the Bolsheviks themselves.
Trotsky’s leadership was of great significance in the Bolshevik victory in the civil war. He was given charge of the entire Red army, and disciplined them using rules such as, ‘Every soldier of the Red Army who voluntarily deserts his post will be shot.’ This created an atmosphere of fear within the army, allowing Trotsky to take control effectively and for a massive increase in deserters. The Strengths of the Bolsheviks themselves was immensely important factor for Bolshevik victory. They would not have been able to defeat the White Army if they had not possessed these strengths. Fear that the Tsarist regime would be brought back by the White Army ensured that there was more support for the Red Army from the peasants, meaning the majority of Russia. A climate of fear created by the ‘Cheka’, the secret police, meant that both those in favour of the Bolsheviks, and their opponents were terrified disagreeing with them.
