Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the greatest and most ingenious men that history has produced. Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 near Vinci, Italy. For the first four years Leonardo lived with his poor mother, Catherina, until his father, Ser Piero da Vinci, realized his potential and took him to live in Florence, Italy. Here he started his learning and became interested in many different subjects. At the age of 17, in about 1469, Leonardo was apprenticed as a studio boy to Andrea del Verrocchio, the leading Florentine painter and sculptor of his time. One of his artistic innovations was the creation of Vitruvian Man. This painting was the first of its kind because it outlined how the human body should be correctly proportioned when painted or drawn. Before Leonardo created Vitruvian Man, artists depicted the human body in an unrealistic, unbalanced not proportional way. From his drawing, Leonardo was able to create a guideline which immediately became a guide for all artists to use in their works in order to create more realistic works and it is still used today.
