This may be one of the most debated issues in baseball history; who is the better player? Before start trying to decide this, I think it would be appropriate to define the terms on which the two will be compared. They will be compared in three main categories: First hitting, then defense, and finally Awards and achievements. Before we start one must also take into account the differences between the two. While Mays played in the National League and had, for the most part, a relatively injury free career, Mantle played in the American league, and had an injury plagued career. Mantle was moved around a lot early in the career from short stop, where he had a short error filled season in minor league ball, to right field where he became the Yankee’s regular starter. Then in the fall of 1951 he was moved again to center field after the retirement of Joe DiMaggio. Defensively Mantle was an average player that seemed to always get the job done, but never made the headlines on the defensive side of the game.
There really was no need for Mantle to make any headlines in the field; the list of awards and achievements due to his offense was enough to keep the papers full. Mantle won the Triple Crown in 1956, and was also the American League MVP in ’56, ’57, and again in ’62. He also played in 12 World Series’, and helped to lead the Yankees to 7 World Series championships.
