We showed up in the thousands. The small town of Rome, New York was flooded with teenagers, hippies, music lovers and the business savvy. No one knew what to expect or what Woodstock '99 would be remembered for- least of all me. Unlike most other people, I did not leave Woodstock totally discouraged by the actions of those people that participated in the riots. Instead, I left discouraged by the actions of the other people- the media as well as the concert goers. The people who could not seem to remember that before the fires and the riots, there was a great concert going on. The people that overlooked that complete strangers were getting along like I have never seen before. But ...

Random acts of kindness surrounded us for the whole weekend. I saw a boy climb through the mud to get someone he had just met a bottle of water. As the sun went down, a man gave a woman his sweatshirt so she would not be cold- again, they had just met. Conversations were exchanged between people that had nothing in common, other than the fact that they were at the same concert. I saw this going on all around me and I was fully appreciative of it- I just wish that everyone was saw the beauty in these simple human actions.
I was not present for the fires or the riots and did not find out about them until the next morning. I woke up refreshed and fully appreciative of modern conveniences when I found out what went on the night before.
