The norm is me. At least that is what I thought as a child. What we did, how we acted, what we wore was the normal thing. As a freshman at Western Illinois University, I learned a whole new realm in the world of . We were taught about formal and informal , mores and folkways, and sanctions. Formal are what is written down and often take the form of laws. Formal were not what we were out to change in Junior High, but in High School we tried to do a lot of that. There were informal which told us it is not right to call names, but you won't get thrown into jail simply for violating an informal norm.
Mores often will take on the form of laws, but if not they will win out over the laws or the formal . Sometimes the mores will turn into the formal and the laws. Folkways were what as a teenager we often went against. A folkway is a norm that governs out everyday behavior whose violation raises relatively little concern.
