Madness is introduced in the story ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck, as quickly as Lennie is introduced. Lennie is introduced as a as “A huge man, shapeless of face. With wide, sloping shoulders; he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little.” Although this does not indicate his personality, it starts a reader to believe something is behind this big teddy bear seemed man. “I don’t want ta hurt you,” he said, “but George’ll be mad if you yell.” Lennie is mad in as sense that all he wants is to please George. If Lennie does something wrong he doesn’t feel bad about it; instead he only worries about how George will react to it. Lennie is like a small child in the aspect that when something is done wrong, they don’t necessarily care about the wrong they have done, but they do care about the situation they have gotten themselves into and what the consequences of their actions might be. Lennie does not understand the strength he has. He is also naļve and lacks to the comprehension of how a normal human being acts in a socially acceptable behavior.
Help never comes to Lennie and George; people are more willing to get out of there way then try to even help. “He is mad, he is not normal,” because he is different and people can be selfish they don’t want to have to waste ...
