Aeschylus's Oresteia, like most other ancient plays, skillfully makes use of various kinds of literary devices to highlight the main themes. One important literary device in Oresteia is the motif of light and darkness that signifies good and evil and emerges in various different occasions in the book. Before we proceed to discuss one specific paragraph for this motif, it is important to know briefly about the plot of this trilogy. sister Electra were unhappy and entangled in the web of darkness. Clytaemestra had killed Orestes's father Agamemnon and being a devoted son and a staunch follower of new gods, he decided to heed the advice of Apollo. Apollo wanted him to kill his mother because that was the only way he could tear the deep clouds of darkness that hovered over the House of Atreus and could bring light back to his palace.

The real action takes place in the play called 'The Libation Bearers' where we come across light-darkness motif repeatedly as Orestes decides to kill his mother. It is here that Orestes learns about the significance of light in his life and associates it with everything good including Apollo's blessings. He knows that if he manages to kill his mother, which is indeed a very difficult decision, he would finally be able to bring light back to his palace and he is certain of Apollo's help in this matter.
