People Are Still Trading Crime For Crime

If there is one point punk-folkie Ani DiFranco wanted to make clear with her song "Crime for Crime", it was that the answer to crime does not lie in the executing of prisoners. America's best known problem child has raised a lot of dust with this particular song. Not very unusual taking into account it is a song about death penalty and America has not quite come to terms with that topic. But leaving that aside I'll turn to the essence of the song which has had quite some effect on me personally as well.

This is a clear example of DiFranco addressing the listener. One is almost forced to contemplate over such a line. DiFranco wants you to think about what justice means to you. So you soon realize that listening to the song just is not enough.
DiFranco wouldn't be DiFranco if she stopped here. She is someone who takes her listener a step further;

You might be the wrong color
you might be too poor
justice isn't something anyone can afford. 4

She does so by specifically raising the question if death penalty is indeed necessary and how that would coincide with the previously mentioned justice. Tables are turned at the end of the song simply to emphasize that question.

Now we've got complicated machines
so no one person
ever has to have blood on their hands
we've got complex organizations
and if everyone just does their job
no one person has to understand. 5
