Prenatal Diagnosis


Also known as a sonogram, an ultrasound reflects sound waves off of the fetus and then is shown on a special computer screen. This test is not very clear and physical features such as limb, heart, brain, and spine abnormalities can't be seen until 16-18 weeks of pregnancy. The ultrasound mostly only detects things of structural and/or physical nature. Things like mental retardation, blindness, and deafness can't be detected by an ultrasound nor can it detect chromosome abnormalities such as down syndrome. Ultrasound may lead to recommendation for further diagnosis. There is no known risk to the mother or the fetus from an ultra sound.

Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is performed at 15-20 weeks of pregnancy. It will detect chromosome abnormalities and other certain genetic disorders. This test can detect up to 95% of neural tube disorders such as spina bifida. It is done by inserting a needle near but not through the woman's naval into the amniotic sac. A small amount of amniotic fluid is withdrawn and sent for laboratory testing. Cells are then separated from the fluid and cultured. After the cells are cultured they can be tested for genetic disorder. The amniotic fluid is measured for the concentration of alpha-fetoprotein. The small amount of amniotic fluid removed must be replaced by the baby as soon as possible. If performed by an experienced doctor the risk is less than 1%.
