What do the stories of Juan de Morga, Gertrudis de Escobar, and Miguel Hernández (Sweet & Nash, chs. 9 and 16) tell us about the treatment of African slaves, slave resistance, and the elasticity of racial categories and identities?
The stories of Juan de Morga, Gertrudis de Escobar and Miguel Hernandez leave two instances of slavery and the other not settling for what his heritage was. We first look at Juan de Morga, a slave that worked long hours with little food for a cruel master. Morga was born into slavery in the city of Oaxaca, the son of a secular priest named Atanasio de Morga. Juan had no brothers or sisters, yet managed to teach himself things by experience.

himself off as a secular priest as well. As Morga was older, he came to the realization that it was possible that he was sold as a boy by family channels. In particular, he believed his father arranged for his sale in Mexico City. (p. 167)
One of the most significant pieces in this chapter was that he escaped so often that eventually he was branded with the letter “S” to represent that he was a slave. Morga attempted suicide once by asking for a glass of wine to calm a pain in his stomach and then drinking a fistful of salt; which was a theory to slow the heart. Eventually, Juan was sold to the Inquisition, and was later refused to be sold to anyone in the Arratia’s employ.
Slave resistance was exemplified by another slave Gertrudis de Escobar. Originally, Gertrudis was not born a slave. She was a free young Mulatta woman who was sold at the age of fourteen.
