Pearl Buck’s novel, The Good Earth, takes place in the early twentieth century in China just before the Revolution. Buck lived in China months after she was born until she was 17 and returned to America for college. She soon returned to China to marry John Buck, an American agricultural specialist who taught American farming methods to the Chinese. In 1931 she published her second book, The Good Earth, which is a collection of three novels- The Good Earth, Sons, and A House Divided. Her second book tells the story of a Chinese peasant named Wang Lung who went from rags to riches as a farmer. Soon later they had another son and a daughter. During this time, Wang Lung purchases some land from the House of Hwang, where O-lan was once a slave. With this extra land, he would be able to make enough silver from his next harvest to join both pieces of his land.
All hope ends once famine drives the family from their home and they end up on the streets in a city of southern China where they had to beg for just enough to feed themselves. His two sons are raised away from the land and exposed to life on this streets. The sons had less value for the land than their father. Wang Lung grew up with the land- being taught how to farm it, harvest it, and survive off of it. He was able to associate his life with the earth. On the other hand, the sons learned to live by stealing to gain possessions and never understood the importance to land. This later became a factor after they receive Wang Lung’s land.
