Jean Jacques Rousseau was a French philosopher of the 18th century. Rousseau has written many philosophical texts among them ‘The Basic Political Writings." This book contains a number of topics and articles that include, Discourse on the Sciences and the Arts, Discourse on Political Economy, Discourse on the Social Contract and finally Discourse on the Origin of Inequality.

Rousseau blames science and art for bringing moral decadence (Rousseau, 4). He gives an example of the world of today and the awards given to various people. To him people are awarded just because of their wits rather than virtues (Rousseau, 17). He blames the culture brought by science and art that has overridden moral virtues in people such that people would do what it takes to win rather than being honest and having a fair-leveled playing ground. Today in many societies and communities in the world, religion and faith are integral parts while moral virtues are promoted in all teachings of the society thus being in line with Rousseau’s argument.
