This quote was taken from the book . While I was reading the first chapter, this quote stood out in my head. I noticed it knowing that there was significance to it, but I was unsure of its complete meaning. Throughout this book, each character is trying to hide all of their flaws that have occurred in the past. They are trying to forget anything that has happened to them yet they know that one day, they will soon have to face the reality of it and share their deepest secrets with everyone.

He has a new hope, an inspiration that has motivated him to extend beyond himself and communicate with others living in his town. He still denies religion and its teachings, but he knows that it is not his fault. At the end of this novel, Silas decides to return to his hometown, Lantern-Yard, and prove to everyone that he was not the theft that committed the crime, but when he returns he finds that the town has vanished and his past is no longer available to the eye. This explains the meaning of the first section of this quote, “the past becomes dreamy because its symbols have all vanished.” In fact, the removal of this town seems to serve as a metaphor for Silas’ ability to find happiness outside of his past
