On Thursday, November 4, 1999, I went to see the play “Working” at Theatre Jacksonville on San Marco Drive. This play was based on Stud Terkel’s book “Working” which was published in 1974. In the play “Working,” the characters play as real life worker such as the ordinary housewife, waitress, and factory worker. In general, the play was about people and what they do for a living. Throughout the play, the characters sang poignant stories about how they feel about their jobs through catchy tunes. about how all women are tricks just like her. She points out that women are taught at a very young age to be prostitutes. For example, women are told to “ Hold out for the highest bidder,” and “Don’t sell yourself cheap,” These types of statements are always being address to women in society. In the prostitute’s eyes, she is no different than any other woman.
Another character in the play “Working” that stole my attention was the valet. He has three children, and he is thirty-two years old. He has been parking cars for forty years. As he sang his life story, he tales about the rigors of his job. He sang about how lousy the pay is as a valet and the lousy tips. He also described how he feels when driving the customer big shot cars. He illustrates this when he drives the customers’ expensive cars, for he pretends the car is his.
