The Battle of Fort Henry The Civil War is the center event in America's past consciousness. While the revolution of 1776-1783 made the United States, the Civil War of 1861-1865 decided what solved two important questions left unresolved by the revolution: Whether the United States was to be the dissolvable union of sovereign states or an indivisible country with the supreme national government, and whether this nation, Born of the statement that all men were made with the equal right to freedom, could continue to be as the largest slaveholding nation in the world.
