A Diverse Squad of Pilgrims

In Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer tells of a particular group of men and women on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Thomas a Becket. The group is highly diverse, as it includes men and women of different social classes, including the high middle class, the middle middle class, the lower middle class, and those representing the church.
One example of a pilgrim representing the upper middle class in this group is the Knight. The Knight, described as a "worthy man" (43) who "loved chivalrye, trouthe and honour, freedom and curtesye" (45-6), is a perfect knight who has been honored for his worthiness. The Wife of Bathe represents the lowest division of the middle class: the working middle class. The Wife's inclusion in the group is also significant because she is one of the only female pilgrims, which adds even more diversity to the squad. The Wife is "somdeel deef" (448) but was a skilled seamstress. The Wife was active in donating to the church, so much so that she would become very angry if anyone donated for her; the lady has even travelled to Jerusalem three times. However, the wife has had five husbands and is "gat-toothed" (470) which is a sign that she may have been a whore.
