“The Catbird Seat” begins in a crowded cigar store in New York City. Where Mr. Erwin Martin is buying a pack of Camel cigarettes, but he is known as a non-smoker and as a non-drinker too. He is quiet, plain person, and who likes his routine until Mrs. Ulgine Barrows comes to mess up his little universe. They both are working for a firm called F & S, where Mr. Martin has been working for a long time there, but she has just started. Their boss, Mr.Fitweiler and she met a party, and then he was hired. She had the position of special adviser to the president; eventually, the company starts to downsize, letting go other employees that had worked ...

knowing she will tell on him. So when he tells her, the very next day she tells Mr. Fitweiler; however, Mr. Fitweiler knows Mr. Martin is a simple man who would never say or do such a thing, and believes Mrs. Barrows is crazy, firing her and sending her to a doctor.

Characters:

Mr. Martin, Mrs. Barrows, and Mr. Fitweiler are the three main character of the story. Mr. Fitweiler is the president of the firm where Mr. Martin and Mrs. Barrows are working. Mr. Martin and Mrs. Barrows are colleagues. The main struggle between Mr. Martin and Mrs. Barrows is that she came out of nowhere, and the decided to change everything. So he is concerned that it’s going to affect or to change his routine.

In this case, quality, cleverness, and tenacity eventually prove to be much superior to the aggressive qualities that many business people use. In this story, Mr. Martin’s personal qualities finally proved to be better than Mrs. Barrows’, even if they aren’t so obvious. Also, as a ...
