The Comparison And Contrasting Of The Masters Of Fredrick Douglass



In the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass (1845) ,there are
many masters that own and regulate his activities. Some masters were very
cruel and unusual. One individual master even gets into a pure out fight
with Douglass. Douglass did gain a little more freedom from this fight
with his master. Even though Fredrick Douglass had many masters who denied
his freedom, he became his own master at the end.
Douglass’s first master Captain Anthony may have been his father.
Captain Anthony was not considered a rich slave owner. He owned about
thirty slaves and two or three farms. This man was a miserable guy that
always was armed with a cowskin and a heavy cudgel. Anthony would whip

This would also drive his want for freedom.

Douglass eventually becomes the property Thomas Auld of who loans
him to his brother Hugh Auld. Keep in mind Lucretia could be Douglass’s
sister. This was a good thing for Douglass because he would start to learn
how to read and write. Sophia Auld began teaching him the ABC’s in her
spare time. This went on for a while, but her husband soon declined this
privilege from happening for the rest of his time with the Auld’s. Hugh
Auld thought that if you teach a slave how to read and write the slave
becomes useless and that a slave should only now how to obey his master.
Even though Hugh Auld did this, Douglass was still in a lot better shape
with them in the city then on the plantation, he says, “A city slave is
almost a freeman, compared with a slave on the plantation” (21). The
significance of this relationship was that Douglass would begin to start
to read and write. Also it taught him to start learning on his own.
