In Sigmund Freud’s book, Civilization and its Discontents, he discusses the area of the human psyche that he calls ‘the id’. Striking similarities between Freud’s theory and characters in Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club become apparent by reading and comparing both works. Because of his frustration with his life, the narrator creates what Arikan describes as “…an Idealized Ego [or id] known as Tyler Durden to do all of the things that he feels that he can not do, or is too weak to do”. Freud argues in Civilization and its Discontents that the id is aggressive by nature. Most people will not act out on this aggressive disposition because it is not acceptable to society.
