The Miller And The Reeve In The Canterbury Tales



In Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, each character is different. These discrepancies are found in the characters appearances, personalities, and occupations. The pilgrims also have much in common. The Miller and the Reeve differ in appearance and specialty skills and are similar in that they both deal with grain and are found to be intimidating.
The most obvious difference is in their look. The Miller is quite revolting. He is a large, husky man with a red beard. He has wide black nostrils and a wart on the tip of his nose. He cheats his customers by pressing his thumb on the scale when weighing the grain. The Reeve also deals with grain but in a different way. He does not use his involvement with grain against anyone else. He is able to estimate the production of grain and keeps an exact record of it at all times. He is also has a keen knowledge of how to keep a granary.
The last significant difference is their specialty skills. Other than selling grain, the Miller is also excellent on the bagpipes. He plays the bagpipes all around town and everyone can hear him. The Reeve has his own expertise. Other than being a great bargainer, he is very experienced at woodworking and carpentry.
Chaucer gives variations to each one of the pilgrims in the Canterbury Tales. The Miller and the Reeve have balanced number of similarities and differences.
