The Phoenix by Sylvia Townsend Warner

Lord Strawberry loved birds and had always dreamed of adding a Phoenix to his bird collection. One day, he decided to go to Arabia by himself and he brought back a Phoenix to England. The bird was majestic and well behaved, in fact a lot of people liked to visit him. When Lord Strawberry died, his death executors tried to find a new owner for the bird, and it is Mr. Poldero who made the highest offer.

Mr. Poldero was the owner of the Poldero's Wizard Wonderworld. The Phoenix was very quiet, so much that one day it did not attract visitors anymore. Mr. Poldero supposed that one day the bird would learn tricks and become more interesting, but it never happened. This is when he wondered ...

this way. The bird did catch fire on time, but all its surrounding did too. So did the humans, including Mr. Poldero who perished in the blaze.

The setting

The story begins at the aviary belonging to Lord Strawberry. Lord Strawberry then goes to Arabia to look by himself for an authentic Phoenix, which he brings back to England. After his death, the Phoenix is moved in a cage at the Poldero's Wizard Wonderworld. The story itself doesn't say in what historical period this story is happening, however, given the fact that there is a Lord, aristocrats and the currency is shillings(this currency stopped being used in 1971), I'd say it happened at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The tone/mood

The narrator makes it looks like there are only two bad guys in this story: Mr. Poldero and Mr. Ramkin.

“Wonder if we could swap him for a livelier one”, or
“You've got to give them scented woods and what not, and they build a nest and sit down on it and catch fire ...
