The Settling of the 13 Colonies

The settling of the thirteen colonies was an undertaking that was larger than life. Even though earlier colonization failed, the desire to come to America was still very much alive in European society. In the early 17th century the permanent settlements were business oriented. They were financed by private companies who expected to make a profit.
Only 104 men had survived the treacherous journey to the “west indies” it was spring when they sailed into the Chesapeake and up the James River landed and that spot was proclaimed it Jamestown. This could have been the end of James Town had it not been for a ship bringing the first governor and Jamestown finally began to make profit and soon more and more people began to come across the Atlantic and settled on the east coast . Much was learned from the early settlement at Jamestown, and these lessons helped the newer settlements to survive and by the late 17th century to thrive.
The economics of the southern colonies, Virginia, South and North Carolina, Georgia and Maryland was mainly agricultural. The main crops were tobacco and cotton, due to the fact that the settling companies only had land and debt and tobacco eventually became a cash crop that turned a profit for these companies. On the other hand, the economy of the northern colonies, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New England and New Hampshire, was based upon more traditional food crops, as well as fishing.
