The Stranger

In Albert Camus’s The Stranger, the indifference of the protagonist, Meursault, towards the events of his life often benefit him. However, it is also used against him. Although some people, such as his love interest Marie, accept his indifference, others are not as fond of his personality. Meursault’s complacent character helps him through tough situations, such as his mother’s death and his time in jail, however, it also leads to his downfall.

own lawyer. As the trial of the Arab’s murder continues, Meursault realizes that “they seemed to be arguing the case as if it had nothing to do with me”(98). Meursault has little say in his case due to his indifference and uncooperativeness with his lawyer and the magistrate.
Meusault’s indifference gets him into the most trouble during his trial. Everything in the past that he was apathetic to is brought up and used against him. For example, because Meursault was not close to his mother and moved her to a home, the prosecutor asks, “why he had put Maman in the home” (87). Meursault responds that he “did not have the money to have her looked after and cared for” (88). The prosecutor uses this honest statement against Meursault, not seeing it as an act of good intentions, but as an act of indifference and lack of concern.
