"The Value of Education"

"The Value of Education" by Mark Halliday is a very inspiring poem, especially to a student or a person in education. The poem shows a lot of insight on how education is often not taken seriously or even overlooked. Halliday uses many poetic devices in this poem to give the right description of his feelings towards the subject, such as, hyperbole and imagery. He does a great job of getting his point across and using these poetic devices to open people's eyes to the things they may not know about education.

Another poetic device that Halliday uses is imagery. He repeatedly tried to create images in the minds of readers. He mentions "I am not leaning on the refrigerator/ in the apartment of a young female colleague/ chatting with oily pep." Also, another example of imagery he wrote was "Because I imagine she may suddenly decide to/ do sex with me while her boyfriend is on a trip." These uses of imagery were used to make the reader think about what the speaker was really thinking about throughout the poem.
Mark Halliday does a very good job of using poetic devices to help the reader imagine exactly what he means. How he describes his point of view on the value of education is not only used in a student's point of view, but also adults. "a very pissed-off worker at Facilities Management is not picking through my garbage and finding several yogurt-stained and tomato-sauce-stained envelopes with my name and address on them." ...
