has been in the news since 1993 for a variety of reasons. It is one of the biggest finds in recent years. With 288 claims now, and almost being the size of Ireland, the find is worth approximately 10 billion dollars and counting and over 300 million dollars to Archean Incorporated alone. (Flanagan 1995) The story behind the find is rather interesting as well, with two geologists named Al Chislett and Chris Verbiski working by themselves came across the find, just to two of them. This find of copper, nickel and cobalt can now provide a stainless steel supply for at least 10 to15 years for industrial use. This is obviously very profitable for the companies involved but also for the shareholders in the companies involved. With industry consuming 60 percent of the world’s nickel, Voisey Bay now provided a stable supply for the next 10 to 15 years. (Flanagan 1995) And as for the town, there are many economic benefits to this find, as well as it provides jobs for the residents. For these reasons, Voisey Bay project should continue.
There is, however, controversy. Out of the 1100 residents of Nain, only 18 of them have found employment with the project. (Flanagan 1995) This does not seem to be quite the number that would be thought to be employed, more should be employed. This project now disrupts the way of life that was known to the people of Nain. There is a great deal of sound pollution and the wildlife are being disrupted as well.
