Few on either side of the Atlantic truly wanted the war of 1812. But none sought aggressively to avoid it by negotiation and none seemed in advance to weigh the consequences if it came. Thought the border incidents and hostilities between settlers and Indians in the northwest. The gradual breakdown of peaceful relations between the United States and Great Britain over a period of more than ten years resulted mainly from commercial controversy and numerous episodes of the sea.
