Theodore Roosevelt's Impact On The Presidency

During the election of 1900, populist Democrat William Jennings Bryan and Republican William McKinley faced each other again. The two had previously competed against each other in 1896. McKinley named as his running mate Theodore Roosevelt, a man thoroughly involved in expanionism. A lot of events had taken place since the last election. American foregn policy had been so succesful in McKinely’s first term that the anti-imperialist Bryan had to drop the issue from his campaign speeches. he was a historian, politician, cowboy, buffalo hunter, crime fighter, reformer, and cavalryman. His active and colorful lifestyle made him famous the world over. He was given his initials, TR, to identify himself. Born into a wealthy family in New York, TR was raised to be a leader. TR was very studious. In 1876 he entered Harvard College, where he became increasingly interested in history. After graduation, TR married Alice Hathway Lee and began to study law. On one tragic day in February 1884, TR lost both his wife, who died in childbirth, and his mother, who died of typhoid. After moving west to run away from these horrible deaths, he started work on his most important and popular work, The Winning of the West. TR believed in the superiority of the Angelo-Saxon race. Soon he returned to New York City in 1886 and remarried Edith Carow.
