Understanding Computers

From counting on our fingers, to the high-tech machines of the
future that were once only a figment of our imagination but now dominate
most of our everyday lives, people and computers have evolved into an ever
changing world where the toys of today are the outdated machines of
tomorrow.
Its hard to think that just a few hundred years back we would all
be counting on our fingers and that anything more than that would require
more than ten fingers would mean a huge brainstorm was to commence. about
3000 years ago yet another invention was made called the abacus it was the

that comes from the abacus and was used in a
similar fashion was the soraban. The soraban comes from the Japanese who
perfected it to there use. The soraban is slightly different in the fact
that it has one bead on the top part or each place value, and has only five
beads in each place value on the bottom part. Even though we now have
calculators and computers to make our computations, in some of the less
developed countries these two inventions that were made nearly three
thousand years ago are still used today, and when in the right hands, can
be used very accurately and quick.

The next real important invention in computer history was a simple
little thing called Napier’s bones, made by John Napier in the 1600’s it

face. by placing certain bones next to each other and at certain angles and
then rotating them you could extract square and cubed roots an other
computations.

Oscar and David
Sundstrand invented an adding machine which still has an impact on the
computers and calculators of today. This machine plays a major role
because in was the machine that introduced the ten-key keyboard that is
used right now on most of todays machines.

In late 1800’s punched cards were introduced. this invention was a
new idea for data storage. It worked by punching holes in a card or tape
strip in a basic code that code be later processed again and then printed
out on paper. in 1880 the U.S. Census Bureau hired a man named Herman
hollerith to create a machine that could tabulate all the information for
the upcoming Census faster than their current method or it ...
