Warriors and Kings - Beowulf

A warrior is a man engaged or experienced in warfare who is involved in some struggle or conflict; a king, however, is someone put into power over others to lead and direct the population they are ruling over. Beowulf is a warrior and a king in the novel Beowulf which was written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon Poet around 700 A.D. Through Beowulf’s life, it is apparent that being a good warrior does not make a good king, Beowulf’s actions and words as both a warrior and a king show that each role has a different set of characteristics that need to be obtained to be successful.

is to prove himself as mighty. However, to be a good king, Beowulf needs to be focused on the needs of a kingdom rather than personal gain. Beowulf’s quick decisions to fight Grendel and Grendel’s mother and his boasts about how he may die are only to guarantee a heroic status after the fight. Beowulf’s quick decisions pay off when fighting in Denmark; however, hasty decisions can only pay off for so long. In Beowulf’s visit to Denmark, Hrothgar is seen as a good king who allows Beowulf to help because he has everything to lose; at any minute he knows that Grendel could come back and destroy his kingdom. Beowulf, on the other hand, has everything to gain from the experience because he has never greatly triumphed in battle. Hrothgar was a king focused on the well being of the people he rules, while Beowulf took on the challenge in hope for personal glory.
