Instances of obedience to authority, regardless of consequences, are plentiful in the history of humanity. When widely held morals are ignored in the face of orders from superiors, the effects are far-reaching. The social dynamics of peer pressure force otherwise upstanding individuals to commit heinous acts. The internationally publicized torture of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib is one such incident where blind obedience to authority had awful consequences.

In spring of 2004, pictures documenting abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib were made public. These pictures were taken by the night shift Military Police in the 372nd MP Company. This reserve unit was trained to support combat operations. With their deployment into interrogation settings at the prison complex at Abu Ghraib, they found themselves conducting interrogations and softening up detainees for further questioning from Military Intelligence.
