While the U.S. government and private resources are available to help small business owners grow their companies and compete with larger firms in an industry, some types of companies are better suited for a small business configuration than others. Complicating the picture for the small business owner is the explosion in e-commerce and online marketing tools available today; however, many small business owners continue to attempt to market their business without the assistance of a web site. According to Liraz (2002), small business owners are in an excellent position to take advantage of niche opportunities in the marketplace; Levinson (1990) agrees and adds that unless a small business has absolutely no competition now and "never will have any," it would be well advised to select a niche that differentiates the business from all competitors (p. 22).
