This explains how men devalued women and didn’t really care about what they thought. They were basically ruled by men even the protagonist tells the reader how her own brother thought the same about women. However, she feels there's “something queer” that her husband diagnosed her with “nervous depression” she feels there’s more to this but doesn’t seem to know what it is.
