The story of Young Goodman Brown is about a man and his faith in himself, his wife and the people of the town he lives in. Goodman Brown struggles between the evil temptations, the devil, and the proper church abiding life. Upon entering the forest he is suspicious of every rock and tree, thinking something evil will jump out at him and harm him. When he finally meets someone on the trail, which appears to evil, he feels confident that he can refuse any temptations. This evil person makes several advances and Goodman refuses. I believe the theme of "Young Goodman Brown" is that excessive pride in yourself can lead to your downfall. Goodman Brown's wife, is also his faith in God. On his journey to meet the devil, he leaves behind his faith. He sees all of the holiest people from his town at the devil worshipping ceremony. Seeing these people here made Brown realize that the potential for evil resides in everyone, even the holiest. Brown, however, knows that the potential for evil resides in him but refuses to accept it because of his pride. He realized that he did not keep his faith on his journey with the devil, as he declared he would. When he returns to the village, he projects his guilt on those he saw at the convert service, even thought he was there himself. ...
