The zoos of the United States hold a special role in the conservation of a vast array of wildlife. As human population continues to grow and further decreases the amount of untouched, natural land, these zoos continue to become more important as sanctuaries for all animals; endangered and thriving. at the chief goal of zoos, conservation. While it is tough to make a sweeping statement about over a hundred thirty zoos of varying sizes, zoos across the United States generally do a good job in protecting and caring for the animals that populate them. Dozens of AZA members zoos participate in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program that aims to provide endangered and threatened species with safe and healthy environments to breed and create self-sustaining and genetically diverse populations. The SSP's have been very successful in their long term goals of reintroducing animals back to their native environments. California Condors, Black-footed ferrets, and Red Wolves are only some of the many species aided by SSP's. While the SSP's and American zoos are largely successful, there have been some species that have not thrived as well as others.
