What is bullying?

Bullying is when someone keeps doing or saying things to have power over another person.

Some ways people bully are by: calling them names, saying or writing nasty things about them, leaving them out in activities, not talking to them, threatening them, and making them feel scared or uncomfortable. Bullies may even hit or kick the victims or make them do things they do not want to do.

You may have these things happen to you or you may have done these things to others but bullying is behavior which is wrong that makes people feel very bad.

colour of their skin, the way they talk, their size or their name. Sometimes young people are bullied because they look like they will not stand up for themselves. The list of why young people get bullied can go on and on but my point is that young people shouldn’t get bullied just because they are different.

Why is bullying harmful?

Some people think bullying is just part of growing up and a way for young people to learn to stick up for themselves. However, bullying can make young people feel lonely, unhappy and frightened. It makes them feel unsafe and think there must be something wrong with them. They lose confidence and may not want to go to school any more. It may make them sick or even lead them to making wrong decisions. Think of how you would feel if you woke up each morning thinking of how you were going to get bullied at school today.
