The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is perhaps one of the most widely misinterpreted and censured books. Since its publication in 1885, a multitude of controversies have risen. Some bear the idea that the book is highly offensive and contains many racist and derogatory remarks. People are ignorant, however; Twain wrote this book to depict the reality of the racist mindset people had in the Antebellum South during 1885 in a satirical manner and to teach a moral lesson that people should look beyond racial discrimination. The mere thought of a white man treating a black slave as anything more than property was outlandish. Jim, a black slave, is portrayed as a paternal figure to Huck, a young white boy. When Jim prevents Huck from seeing a dead body for fear of Huck’s psychological well-being, Jim exhibits fatherly characteristics. Huck treats Jim not as property, as critics would think, but as a man and with equity. This is exemplified when Huck is faced with the predicament of turning Jim over to the men searching for escaped slaves. Huck ignores the rules of conventional morality and lies to the men in order to keep Jim. This event shows Huck’s devotion and compassion for Jim.
