The mere thought of a white man treating a black slave as anything more than property was outlandish. Jim, a black slave, is portrayed as a paternal figure to Huck, a young white boy. When Jim prevents Huck from seeing a dead body for fear of Huck’s psychological well-being, Jim exhibits fatherly characteristics. Huck treats Jim not as property, as critics would think, but as a man and with equity. This is exemplified when Huck is faced with the predicament of turning Jim over to the men searching for escaped slaves. Huck ignores the rules of conventional morality and lies to the men in order to keep Jim. This event shows Huck’s devotion and compassion for Jim.
