Marketing affects our daily lives in several overt and covert ways. Overtly, marketing influences practically all our buying decisions. Though we may choose to make conscious compromises in the actual brand we purchase, depending on affordability or priorities, we still operate within a given consideration set.

The products and brands that fall within our consideration set are present because of the influence of marketing through the advertisements we see, the displays that catch our attention when we walk through a supermarket or mall, and sometimes through the allure of a 'price off' or the chance to win a grand prize through a consumer contest.

Marketing also affects us in important life decisions such as our choice of college or career. Why does every aspiring college graduate dream of admission into a Harvard or Stanford? Why was there such a rush to qualify as a computer geek in the last few years? The answer lies in how certain educational institutes and careers are marketed, sometimes inadvertently like the heady days of the dot coms, and sometimes in a planned fashion. An excellent example of the latter case is the way the American Army markets itself as a good career option. I, myself, am conscious of the fact that the career options I am considering have been influenced by Marketing promises of better income prospects, lifestyle et al.
