No Child Left Behind

The law that is known as "No Child Left Behind'' is the primary statute governing the federal government's role in education. First passed during the Johnson administration as the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, it was rebranded as part of its last major overhaul in 2001, when Democrats joined with President George W. Bush to make its focus the use of standardized test scores in schools, particularly those serving minority students. According to the article by Alex Tehran of Time Magazine, this law’s greatest accomplishment has been shining a spotlight on low-achieving schools and demanding that they do better. It is suggested that schools track the progress of each student year to year. The number one goal is to get students moving to the next grade level fully prepared.
Another issue is whether or not the school districts can trust the state to set standards that are feasible for the students. Some of the states are requiring districts to pass by any means necessary, including cheating on the tests if needed. Also making it easier is another strategy. But in European countries, this is not a problem because of the uniformity of the curriculum. It is suggested that the state publishes the test scores and hopefully the parents will become so outraged that they would further stress the importance a good education.
