Response to “The Chambered Nautilus”

When I first read the poem, it was kind of confusing and hard to understand. It wasn’t until I read it the second time that I figured out that Oliver Holmes was actually writing about a sea creature, or, at least I think that’s what he’s writing about. What convinces me that he’s writing about a sea creature is the fact that the setting for the poem is in the ocean, and in stanza 15-18, he writes “year after year beheld the silent toil that spread his lustrous coil; still as the spiral grew, he left the past year’s dwelling for the new” This makes me think that the creature is nocturnal.

Also, in stanza 5-7, he writes “In gulfs enchanted, where ...
