The Higher Education Act passed by congress in 1998 has affected college students across the United States. Students are being denied federally funded financial aid and grants for being convicted of various drug-related offenses. This new law prevents anyone convicted of a drug-related offense from receiving federal financial aid and grants.
This law will affect students of low to moderate incomes and minorities. Federal Financial Aid and grants are need-based programs. Denying this aid to students convicted of a drug charge is not the answer. This could possibly push the student into illegal activities to gain the money needed to return to school. On December 15th, 1998 James Wolf was convicted of possession of less than one gram of marijuana. This conviction caused the former Western Carolina University student to withdraw from college because he could not afford to pay tuition and book fees without federal aid. In February of 1999 James Wolf was convicted of delivery of one kilogram of cocaine. When asked why he was dealing in cocaine, he replied, " I was trying to raise money to finish college." It looks like James will be studying in prison now.
Now I ask you, " Does this law seem fair?" I do not think so. Now is the time to let congress know being tough on students is not the way to look tough on drugs. Just because a student is caught with or uses drugs should in no way determine their financial aid status. Next thing you know congress will be taking away financial aid for underage drinking. By stating your opinion of this law's unfairness in no way means that you support illegal drug use. Congress should ...
